About the Item
China, a fine archaic human effigy hand-carved from a granular medium to dark gray volcanic stone with six (6) "V" sections carved front. Neolithic period, Hongshan culture (circa 4700-2900 BC)
Likely a fertility ceremonial ritual stone. Note the pecked surfaces and the stone carved scooped out eye and mouth sockets.
Quality: fine original condition, no repairs, as collected. Dark varied patina from appropriate age.
Dimensions: 14 inches tall and 7 inches width.
About Hongshan Culture:
The Hongshan culture was a Neolithic culture in northeastern China. Hongshan sites have been found in an area stretching from Inner Mongolia to Liaoning, and dated from about 4700 to 2900 BC. The culture is named after Hongshanhou , a site in Hongshan District, Chifeng. The Hongshanhou site was discovered by the Japanese archaeologist Torii Ryuzo in 1908 and extensively excavated in 1935 by Kosaku Hamada and Mizuno Seiichi.

African Big Bongo Peoples Stone Female Sculpture
Located in South Burlington, VT
Africa, Bongo Peoples, stone female commemorative figure from Southern Sudan. A fine specimen in naturally weathered condition; hand carved from a porous orange-black stone, 20th century. Similar funerary stone sculptures in various sizes were likely crafted over many centuries.
Original patina from appropriate age.
A nice custom base included.

History:
The Bongo are an ethnic group living in South Sudan, mostly in the Tonj District. They speak the Bongo language, one of the Bongo-Baka languages. Unlike the Dinka and other Nilotic groups, the Bongo are not a cattle herding people and do not use cows for bride price. Subsistence farming is the primary source of food, though money is obtained by working in forestry, building, selling honey, and other various means.
