About the Item

Out of context, this carved wood hat stand has a curious, octopus-like appearance. Intricately embellished with carved flourishes, the hat Stand displays the opulence of court fashion, where rank and status was expressed through fashion and its accoutrements. Hats were de rigueur for any respectable male. During the Qing dynasty conical hats with upturned brims were worn for official occasions with buttons of precious stones at the peak indicating rank. As a sculptural wonderment or doffed with a cap, this curiosity adds a bit of whimsy to any room.
