Japanese Miniature Tansu Work or Sewing Chest (Haribako) Taisho Era Circa 1920

About the Item

Circa 1920 (Taisho period) this Japanese sewing work box is made of highly figured mulberry wood and of the most beautiful grain and fine quality workmanship; in un-restored and excellent all original condition ; most significantly; it has the ORIGINAL measuring device (ruler) included in the slot provided at the right top side. These boxes are rarely found with the ruler and in this original condition; 99% of the time the ruler is lacking, in fact, most casual collectors have no idea that it was supposed to have a ruler and question the purpose of the slot at the top. This cabinet has a five drawer front configuration with a two drawer interior (under double hinged top lid); initially used to house sewing implements and materials for the minor repairing of household linens and clothing; probably more utilized today for the storage of jewelry, valuables, and/or personal effects----or simply to look nice on top of a chest of drawers. Note under the hinged top the "secret" compartment, arrived at by lifting out the visible fitted front drawer, exposing the rear drawer which you pull out by reaching into the center hole (see attached video with this listing--also note how drawers move in and out so smoothly; nice quality). This box is well made, solidly built and has no repairs, and still maintains the completely untouched original superb looking surface (see images). The burl has a copious wonderful grain rendition and pleasing blonde/brown color. It is a challenge to find the measuring device which was obviously used to calculate lengths and an integral part of the integrity of a Haribako (sewing box); almost always missing. The Shaku ruler; attached, calculates 30.3 cm to nearly a foot. It fell out of favor after World War II, and was officially banned on March 1st, 1966 in lieu of the metric system. This may contribute to the rarity of finding a Tansu work chest with the original ruler. Dimensions: 7 1/2" deep x 12" wide x 10" high Provenance: Recently acquired from a high quality San Francisco estate.

Miniature Salesman's Sample Victorian Bureau Chest, American, circa 1890
Located in Incline Village, NV
This late 19th century miniature 3-drawer dresser with original mirror mounted above, was likely used as a salesman's sample by an itinerant sales person who traveled the countryside promoting his articles, usually by seeking out merchants to take orders based on this scaled down miniature bureau, or by leaving it on display in a merchant's establishment to take orders from that merchant's customers. This American bureau...

18th Century Qing Dynasty Fish Shaped Cricket Holder
Located in Incline Village, NV
Uniquely fabulous and highly unusual item for those seeking something different; this 18th century "cricket holder" from the Qing Dynasty is in the shape of a fish and is made of hand wrought metal, with nice detail and an open woven body which provided air to the cricket. A sophisticated clasp locking mechanism on the underneath of the fish kept the pet cricket contained in the caged holder. Obviously this was intact when someone at some point in time tried to remove whatever was inside by making a hole at the base of the tail to get it out (see image). This hand held cricket cage holder is in very nice and all original condition, save for the small hole; not fragile in any way; sturdy in structure with no repairs. For over 1000 years the Chinese have used crickets...

Doorstop "Golfer" by Hubley, circa 1920
By Hubley Manufacturing Company 2
Located in Incline Village, NV
This doorstop, also known as "Overhead Swinging Golfer," is more difficult to find than it's "Putting Golfer" counterpart doorstop; which is also made by Hubley. Manufactured by the Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1920, this cast iron doorstop is in outstanding all original bright paint with no touch up or restoration of any kind, and in wonderful patina. It depicts an older, grey haired man, with typical knicker golf garb, taking a wild swing at a golf ball resting on the grass. It has a semi "hollow" rear with a "238" factory marking, indicating that it is, in fact, by Hubley and original. It is noted in Jeanne Bertoia's 1985 book on doorstops page 60; and referenced on page 211 of the Smith book on doorstops. A must for the doorstop or golfing memorabilia...

The bank operates as follows: Press down on the lever in front just beneath the steering wheel. The sailor raises his right arm and lowers his left arm revealing a slot on the right side of the bank where the sailor's left arm was, inviting the deposit of a coin (see image). Release the lever, and the arms return to their original position (see image). Coins are removed via the original key lock trap.
