Japanese Meiji Period Tansu Chest in the Sendai Dansu Style Made of Keyaki Wood

About the Item

This 19th-century Japanese Tansu clothing chest produced in the Meiji period is made of Japanese cedar wood (cryptomeria Japonica) in its inner parts, while for the outer parts it is made of Keyaki wood, (Ulmacea), complemented by hand-cut iron inserts and featuring a lacquered finish with reddish brown tones, making it extremely sought-after. The Sendai Isho-Dansu-style Tansu is compact; with a long drawer at the top end and three drawers below on the left side. On the right side of the cabinet are two smaller drawers interspersed with a door that conceals "the safe" inside. On the sides are handles for carrying the cabinet, which was designed to be used while traveling. The front it's fitted with an exceptionally rendered hand-cut iron hardware with floral motifs.
