20th Century Japanese Tansu Chest in Two Parts

About the Item

Crafted in Japan during the 20th century, this Pauownia wood (Kiri in Japanese ) tansu chest is a fine example of Japan's traditional mobile cabinetry. The long side handles flip up to permit a pole to be inserted so the chest can be carried by two people. This portability allowed the tansu to be easily moved to different rooms or even to travel outside the home. It also allowed for quick removal in case of fire, which was common. The metal corner braces, which are so attractive to the eye, gave much support to the relatively lightweight wood.
