Large Hibachi Brazier in Kiri Wood with Gold Makie Lacquer, planter

About the Item

A rare and majestic example of traditional Japanese domestic furnishings, this monumental kiri wood hibachi (charcoal brazier) dates to the late Edo to early Meiji period (early 19th century) and is richly decorated in an aristocratic style. The cylindrical form is generously proportioned and features an extraordinary surface adorned with elaborate floral makie lacquer—a technique using sprinkled gold powder to create intricate designs. The refined lacquer work and grand scale strongly suggest that this piece was a custom commission for an elite residence or noble household. The warm grain of the kiri wood (paulownia) contrasts beautifully with the opulent gold decoration, while the copper insert and side handles underscore its functional and aesthetic quality. Originally used to hold hot coals for heating, today this hibachi serves as a sculptural interior object, embodying centuries of Japanese craftsmanship and domestic luxury. Its presence would enhance any wabi-sabi, antique, or Asian-inspired interior.
