A Pair of Chinese Ming Period Patinated Bronze Enameled Elephant Vases/Censors. The elephant has a Buddhistic caparisoned dress with pearl harness, tassels, and high-relief dragon patterned blanket. On its back is a removable bulbous vase form with flared neck (tianquiping). adorned with a high-relief dragon on the bulbous vase body and two dragon handles flanking either side of the upper-portion of the vase. The elephants almond shaped eyes, diminutive tusk, pinched ears, with trunk swayed inward. The bronze is lost wax cast method. It has verdigris patina with evidence of previous polychrome enamels that were used to color the bronze. These are a true pair and were made together during the Ming dynasty. This pair has survived together for the better part of 350 years or more. The condition, size, form, and rarity of this pair is second to none. China, Circa: 1640 (Ming Dynasty)
