Pair 18th/19th Century Chinese Bronze Elephant Figure Candle Holder Sculptures

About the Item

A pair of finely cast and incised burnished bronze candlestick elephants, Chinese school, 18th-19th Century, Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). Each elephant is standing foursquare with head held straight, one with drop finial, both featuring the body decorated with rich trappings and the back draped with a fringed blanket surmounted by a baluster vase that can be used as a candle holder. circa 1800 PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION / REFERENCE: - October 2024; Acquired from the reputable auction house, Dallas Auction Gallery, Dallas, Texas. "Asian Antiques and Works of Art" catalog, lot #0324 Owned and curated by Reyne Hirsch, a media personality and expert in 20th century decorative arts. She's was a top appraiser for Antiques Roadshow on PBS for 13 years, as well as a leading contributer to the Huffington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, amongst other publications. She's also founded highly regarded art galleries and exhibits throughout the United States. - July 2016; A nearly identical pair sold at Christie's "The Art Of China" online auction catalog #13894, "A Pair Of Caparisoned Elephants" lot#145, for $1905 with a $2000-$3000 estimate DIMENSIONS: (approx) 6" High, 8" Wide 3" Deep (each) CONDITION REPORT: Attractive appearance. Overall very good antique condition with nicely aged patinated finish, scattered verdigris accretions. One example drop finial no longer extant, other with evidence of old restoration to leg. Remnants of old wax buildup remain. Wear commensurate with age, handling and exposure. Both examples structurally sound and present well Wonderful period Asian decorative arts, used as exotic tabletop decor, small scale matching figural statues, candle stands, garnitures flanking an oriental shelf clock, or joss stick incense burner censers, these remarkable elephant figurines are sure to add graceful sophistication, elegant warmth, and rich cultural interest to any space!
