Set of Twelve Zodiac Animal Figures, Tang Dynasty
About the Item
The twelve Chinese zodiac animals are more than just symbols of the calendar—they were once powerful guardians of the afterlife. During the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE), these figures were placed in tombs, dressed in official robes, to ward off evil and ensure cosmic balance in the next world.
Unlike everyday zodiac signs, these statues represented a fusion of earthly order and spiritual protection. They are a testament to the enduring power of mythology, tradition, and the human desire for protection beyond the mortal realm.
Though their original vibrant colors have faded, their presence remains strong—a lasting testament to the Tang dynasty’s artistry and the deep-rooted belief in the zodiac’s protective power.
