A Very Large and Rare 14-16thC Nagapattinam Bronze Buddha, 8000

15thC Sri Lankan Divided Kingdom Period Standing Bronze Buddha. Looks to have a high silver content in the alloy based on the sheen of the surface and the softness of the surface. Quite rare to find a figure from this period in this large size and high quality--the vast majority are the later Kandy style, which look similar but have rounder faces and distinctive ripples covering the robes. If you search the internet you will find very few of this type outside of museums or high end auction houses that are not just a few inches tall and quite provincial in casting. Baby Buddha- represents the Buddha right after his birth pointing toward Heaven and Earth so they can witness his first steps. Twenty years ago I had a near identical Japanese Baby Buddha. This one has a finer patina and may be more finely cast, but is extremely similar in almost every way. It was made in the same workshop, probably by the same hand. Fortunately, the other one had an inscription on it (this one does not, but is almost certainly the same age as the other one plus or minus 30 years).
