About the Item

Sharing with you this lovely dish on footring, the sides modelled as pomegranate-shaped panels in low relief, lightly scalloped rim. Decorated in iron-red and gold on the glaze. Porcelain dish with modelled tulip motif in the side and scalloped edge, painted in underglaze blue and on the glaze in red and gold. On the flat a medallion with a landscape in which a man and a woman in a carriage drawn by two horses. At the back of the carriage a servant holding a parasol above their heads; a second servant sits on a horse. On the side pomegranate-shaped panels with flower branches, between the panels flower tendrils; on the edge a decorative band. This type of porcelain with decorations painted only in iron-red, gold and some black enamel, is traditionally called *Milk and Blood' in The Netherlands. Interestingly, in the 18th century the name was also applied to a specific type of imported Indian chintz, with predominantly red decorations on a light ground (Arnolli). Apparently, this type of porcelain was popular mainly among the Dutch and the very few pieces that can be found elsewhere in Europe usually come from The Netherlands. The composition and iconography conform to the normal export assortment of blue-and-white Kangxi porcelain of C. 1700.
