About the Item

Sharing with you this nice Chinese porcelain Vase from the Kangxi period. Visible in the pictures is a slender baluster-shaped vase with a gently widening body and a long neck flaring to a bell shape at the top. Attached to the neck are two opposing elephant head-shaped handles. The body is painted with individual lotus petal-shaped cartouches inscribed with children and beautiful women. The underside of the piece is marked with an artemisia leaf design. The motif of the figures of tall court ladies was commonplace in porcelain decoration from the 1680s and we come across it throughout the Kangxi period. It later gradually faded from the repertoire of the Chinese porcelain painters, however. A range of pieces with this design was also included in the cargo of the Vung Tau shipwreck. Chinese Ming Small Vase porcelain Wanli / Transitional Hatcher wreck, Ca 1625-40
By The Hatcher Collection
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a hand painted 17th century, late Ming dynasty, porcelain Jar or small Vase which we attribute to the Hatcher shipwreck cargo, this piece being from the Wanli /transitional period, circa 1625- 1640. The Jar/ Vase is fairly thickly potted with a very white glaze to the porcelain. It is decorated with a man and a boy stood against a tree with rocks, mountains and flying bats in the background all hand painted in various shades of a clear under-glaze cobalt blue. The irregular shaped head, bald high forehead, and straight pencilled beard with moustache support this date and period. Notes: The Hatcher Cargo...
