Blue-Glazed Porcelain Box from Hatcher Collection

About the Item

17th century Chinese porcelain blue-glazed circular pill box from the Hatcher Collection, painted in different tones of blue with a central prunus flower on a wave pattern ground that is repeated on the lower section of the box. This charming little box was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China seas in approximately 1643. The hoard was the subject of a large sale at Christie's Amsterdam in 1984, which is where we purchased this box. The finish on this piece has been softened, with the blues more muted due to its 300-year stay in saltwater. Provenance: Christies Amsterdam, Hatcher Cargo, June 12-13, 1984, lot 200. Similar boxes from lots 211 and 213 are pictured on p. 23 of the sale catalog.
