China, 18th Century, Blue-and-White Decorated Dish, circa 1760

About the Item

This porcelain plate, dated around 1760, features an exquisite design showcasing a basket adorned with delicately rendered flowers. Its smooth surface and refined brushwork attest to the craftsmanship of Jingdezhen artisans, whose mastery of the blue and white technique enhances the natural beauty of every detail. Measuring 36.2 x 27.1 x 2.6 cm, this masterpiece was designed for export to satisfy a clientele eager for rare, original pieces from the Far East. The basket motif laden with flowers evokes a bucolic and serene atmosphere, subtly merging Chinese tradition with Western refinement. The hand-painted composition reveals stylized flowers with crisp contours and a harmonious arrangement in keeping with eighteenth-century Chinese pictorial traditions. Each brushstroke expresses an aesthetic delicacy that underscores the symmetry and balance of forms, characteristics that are the hallmarks of export porcelain from this era. The exceptional quality of the glaze, combined with the precision of the design, reflects the artisans’ relentless pursuit of excellence, imbuing each piece with a unique and timeless character. The transparency of the glaze enhances the subtle interpretation of the decorative scene, reinforcing the impression of a plate that is both minimalist and highly prized. As a decorative object, this plate encapsulates the refinement of an era defined by vibrant commercial and cultural exchanges between China and the West. Pieces from this period, exported to meet a burgeoning demand in European salons, were cherished for their elegant aesthetics and impeccable craftsmanship. The continued preservation of this plate in pristine condition not only underscores the intrinsic durability of Jingdezhen porcelain but also highlights the care taken by its successive owners over the centuries. The floral-decorated basket plate thus stands as a testament to the successful fusion of Chinese artistic tradition with European aesthetic sensibilities, embodying an invaluable piece of eighteenth-century cultural history.
