Chinese Blanc-de-Chine Seated Guanyin Altar Piece , 19th/20th Century
A large and impressive work, in two parts bearing seal/reign mark on the back of the mandala.
The serene bodhisattva in front of a pagoda shaped mandala, wearing an ornate headdress, beaded jewel necklace, seated in dhyanasana, resting on a lotus base.
This depiction of a seated Buddha with the right hand raised and facing outwards has two common meanings. The first is that of the protection Buddha, as the raised right hand symbolically represents a shield. The second meaning, Overcoming Fear.
This figure has the right hand is raised in Vitarka Mudra with the middle finger and the thumb touching each other which represents 'great compassion.'
The left hand holds the Ruyi which symbolizes power and good fortune/as desired; as one wishes.
The separate conforming base with shingled pagoda motif with four stylized dragons at each corner.
