About the Item
This whimsical Chinese ginger jar is decorated with famille verte enamels for an allover design of leafy green cabbage. Depicting the white stalks and curling leaves of a head of napa cabbage or bok choy, the enameled decoration is finely brushed with careful linework and vibrant shades of green, pink and yellow.
A popular motif in Qing-dynasty ceramics, cabbage is a visual idiom for unexpected wealth and good fortune. A butterfly or moth rests on either side of the jar, a motif for happiness and joy. Dated to the late 19th century, this antique jar is a beautiful example of the cabbage & moth motif, rich aged with subtle crazing and a patina only time can achieve.
