Chinese Porcelain Ming Provincial Jar or Vase Blue & White, Jiajing 16th Century
About the Item
This is a Chinese handcrafted porcelain provincial jar or vase, all hand painted in cobalt blue and dating to the Ming period of the early 16th century or possibly earlier.
The jar is handcrafted, strongly potted with a baluster shape and short neck. The inner top rim and foot rim are all hand cut. The jar is glazed inside and out and to the underside foot, in a fairly thick light grey/blue colour. It is hand decorated in a continuous floral pattern going around the jar, with quick brush strokes, as is usual on provincial wares of this period. It has a blue ring around the top neck, central section and two rings above the foot all in cobalt blue. The colour of the blue varies from a very light grey blue through to a very dark almost black colour.
This is definitely a Chinese Ming dynasty piece but the date of making could be from the Hongzhi period (1488 -1505) up to the Wanli period which started in 1573 and we have given it a nominal date of early 16th Century.
Overall a very decorative piece of Chinese Ming porcelain from the 16th Century.

Chinese Ming Small Vase porcelain Wanli / Transitional Hatcher wreck, Ca 1625-40
By The Hatcher Collection
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a hand painted 17th century, late Ming dynasty, porcelain Jar or small Vase which we attribute to the Hatcher shipwreck cargo, this piece being from the Wanli /transitional period, circa 1625- 1640.
The Jar/ Vase is fairly thickly potted with a very white glaze to the porcelain.
It is decorated with a man and a boy stood against a tree with rocks, mountains and flying bats in the background all hand painted in various shades of a clear under-glaze cobalt blue. The irregular shaped head, bald high forehead, and straight pencilled beard with moustache support this date and period.
