About the Item
A recent find: an old Japanese SHOKI-IMARI blue-and-white porcelain ware bottle
with unique hand painted designs called Kusabana-Chou-Monyou (Grass, flower, and butterfly patterns).
Desirable Wabi-Sabi form.
Dates to the early Edo period, early 19th century.
Wabi-sabi crafted as a purposely tilted creation. Handsome rich blue and cream glazes cover its extremities.
Used perhaps as a vase or water vessel, this superb example possesses some say -wabi-sabi - the Japanese aesthetic of perfection of the imperfection - that unmistakable sublime look and feel collectors seek and covet.
It has no repairs or damages.
It would also make a very special vase.
We were very lucky to have found this one from our recent acquisitions in Japan. It would be difficult to improve on this fine example.
Dimensions: 12 inches tall
Provenance: old Japan art collection
Only one. Irreplaceable.
Wabi-sabi is a concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics constituting a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence , specifically impermanence , suffering and emptiness or absence of self-nature.

Located in South Burlington, VT
Another Gem
Japan, a fine substantial 11" tall antique monumental green and blue gourd shaped vase with unusual blue egg plant decoration glazed in rich deep green, blue, and brown colored crackled drip glazes.
It was crafted by the master artisans of the Japanese southern Awaji Kiln, from the late Meiji to Taisho period (1910s-1920s).
The impressive porcelain vase crafted in a classic wabi sabi modernist form with an original multi glazed finish. It is unsigned as many normally were from that period and is in original condition with normal kiln origination surface creation imperfections on bottom.
Dimensions: 11 inches tall and 5.5 inches diameter..
Provenance: private north west coast collection.
Undoubtedly influenced by the modernist movement and more likely by the visit to the Awaji kilns by the noted English designer Christopher Dresser of Linthorpe Art Pottery...

Kaneshige Toyo National Treasure Signed Japanese Bizen Pottery Sake Bottle Vase
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful, perfectly shaped and balanced antique Bizen ware shibui sake bottle (tokkuri) vase by renowned Japanese master potter/artist Kaneshige Toyo (1896-1967) featuring a unique natural, wonderfully textured organic forming ash glaze. Kaneshige is universally considered to be the founder of modern Bizen pottery.
In 1956, Kaneshige was certified as a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage) for his work in Bizen Ware pottery/ceramics. Bizen Ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally from the Bizen province, presently a part of the Okayama prefecture. It is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware).
The piece is signed/ sealed on the base with one of Kaneshige's traditional incised marks.
A rather striking and engaging work. One of the best Kaneshige works we have come across. Scarce and hard to find in such an excellent condition. Would be a fantastic addition to any Japanese/Asian pottery or Bizen Ware collection or eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting.
Kaneshige's work can be found in numerous prominent collections and museums including:
Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, Seto, Japan
Brooklyn Museum, NY
Hagi Uragami Museum, Yamaguchi, Japan
Honolulu Art Museum, HI
Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Kasama, Japan
