A Fine Imperial Japanese Satsuma Vase
By Hyokoseki,
Meiji era
Of baluster form with waisted neck and flared foot, finely decorated in polychrome enamels and richly gilded, the body densely painted with large peony blooms in shades of iron-red, cobalt, turquoise, and green, the petals and foliage delicately heightened in gilt and outlined in raised moriage. The neck encircled by a band of stylised butterflies among scrolling foliage, all above a lappet border at the foot. The shoulder reserved with cloud-shaped panels framing floral sprays. The reverse with the Shimazu clan crest painted in blue above an inscription reading Dai Nippon Satsuma-yaki Hyokoseki-ga in iron-red.
Size: H- 18.5 cm, w-10 cm, diameter 6.5 cm
In very good condition, no damage or restoration observed.
