About the Item
A Fine Pair of Japanese Satsuma Vases, Meiji Period , Signed Reizan.
Of baluster form with gently flared neck and footrim, each vase exquisitely hand-painted in with continuous panoramic scenes of tranquil lakeside landscapes. The imagery includes maple and pine trees, temple pavilions, flying cranes, and distant Mount Fuji—executed in typical Kyoto palette on a warm cream crackle-glazed ground.
The shoulder is encircled with a finely detailed brocade border of stylized floral motifs in rich gilt and cobalt, while the foot is bordered by a geometric lappet pattern. The scenes are meticulously outlined in raised gilt, showcasing the exceptional detail typical of late-Meiji Satsuma ware intended for export.
Signed in gilt rectangular seal to the base, possibly reading “Reizan” (礼山)—a Kyoto-based artist active in the late 19th to early 20th century.
