About the Item

A gorgeous Japanese studio pottery Chawan tea cup that features a mix of shifting colors, glazes and textures as well as elements of Shino Ware and Hagi Ware. The piece radiates in the light. This particular piece also encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic (which is so revered and coveted in Japan) - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them. Signed by the maker/artist on the base with a distinct three line mark. We have seen this mark before. The artist is clearly a master potter. But thus far we have been unable to identify who the maker may be. Likely from the mid to later Showa Period (1926-1989) This unique one of a kind work (along with two other pieces we will be listing) came from a collection of fine Japanese and Asian ceramics. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting. Dimensions: 4" high, 3" wide, 3.25" deep.
