Japanese Porcelain Charger Plate Finely Hand Painted, Edo Period Circa 1840

About the Item

This is an excellent example of a Japanese porcelain Charger or very large plate with a finely hand painted design, dating to the Edo period circa 1840 or possibly earlier. This charger is a fine hand painted example, decorated with a light under-glaze blue border, then hand painted over-glaze in a wide palette of colors including a light cobalt blue, red, orange, yellow, green and aubergine, all in different shades and with rich gilding throughout. The pattern has a central brocade design then four main panels around the plate. Within these panels are mixture of landscape features including mountains, trees and flying birds, with the other panels having further birds by a stream with flowering plants, together with further brocade designs. A quality feature of this piece is that the style of decoration is lighter and more refined than the usual densely decorated Imari patterns, with the landscape and flowering bushes having a distinctive Kakiemon style, with high quality painting. The reverse of the charger is hand painted under-glaze in a light blue/grey color with three sets of floral sprigs around the rim together with further blue circles either side of the base rim. We date this piece to the Edo period of the mid-19th century, or possibly earlier. Stand not included.
