Large Chinese Dayazhai Style Temple Jar and Cover, Mid 20th Century, China
About the Item
A large and impressive vintage Chinese turquoise ground and grisaille decorated Dayazhai style porcelain temple jar and cover, with a four character "Yongqing Changchun" mark in iron red, mid 20th century, China.
The large vase of elegantly proportioned baluster shape with a splayed foot, narrow waist, bulbous body, high shoulders, and short, wide neck, all surmounted by a cover. The cover of domed form with a wide brim, and topped with a large "jewel" shaped knob.
The vase is decorated in the Dayazhai style and color palette, with a light turquoise ground and exuberant sprays of chrysanthemum and hibiscus in grisaille. The blooms and blossoms in white, the leaves and stems in shades of gray and black. The grisaille coloration in striking contrast against the turquoise ground. Two smiling dragons wind their sinuous bodies around the body of the vase, their legs akimbo as if dancing.
The base of the vase with wide geometric border In yellow and pink enamels. The shoulder with a band of ruyi-shaped lappets, also in yellow and pink enamels.
The underside with a four character "Yongqing Changchun" mark in iron red.
The Dayazhai style was created for and under the direction of the Dowager Emperess Cixi, with the striking patterns and colors becoming popularized and admired even after her reign.
