Pair Chinese Export Famille Verte Porcelain Quail Boxes, Late Qing Dynasty

About the Item

An exquisite pair of Chinese Export famille verte biscuit porcelain "Nesting Quail" boxes with fitted hardwood stands, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The delightful pair of boxes formed as quail, modeled in biscuit porcelain and portrayed in a roosting position, with their wings tight against their bodies, legs and feet tucked under. The heads are turned to face the viewer, eyes wide open and alert, with beaks firmly closed. The quail are wonderfully detailed, with raised and line detailed feathers patterned and painted in famille verte enamels of green, yellow, and puce. The top of the body lifts to reveal a turquoise ground interior. The underside with modeled legs and feet, and unglazed. Presented on carved and fitted hardwood stands raised on short feet. Quail are auspicious animals in Chinese culture. Admired for their fierceness and loyalty, quail are also symbols of peace and harmony. The first character for quail (ān) is a homophone for the Chinese word for peace and stability (ān). Pairs of quail then symbolize wishes for doubling a harmonious and peaceful life.
