About the Item

This pair of Japanese Satsuma vases decorated with a river scene and gilded lion heads on either side, presents a fascinating blend of traditional and decorative elements. Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of Japan and is renowned for its finely crackled, creamy-white glaze and meticulously detailed, often overglaze enamel decoration. Also associated with landscapes, and floral motifs, often with liberal use of gold. River scenes are a common motif in Japanese art, often symbolizing tranquility, harmony with nature, and the passage of time. Accenting Lion heads, "shishi" or "karashishi" in Japanese, are traditional guardians and protectors, symbolizing strength, courage, and warding off evil spirits. The gilding technique, creates a lustrous and opulent effect. These satsuma pieces encapsulate the combination of traditional motifs and decorative elements, beautiful and culturally significant additions to any collection.
