About the Item

A matching pair of porcelain plaque from late Qing dynasty nicely framed in giltwood carved as bamboo. The Famille Jaune plaques were likely the remnant from a much larger group, perhaps from a floor screen. They vividly depict classic battling scenes taking place outside of a city gate, likely on a Kong-fu competition ground. Warriors with weapons on foot or horse were exercising their skills besides a dragon-coiled pole with the scrolling cloud. The over glaze enamel decoration is extremely detailed and carries tremendous motion. The plaque measures 12.25" x 6", with frame: 20.5" x 13.25". They are openly framed in a gilt wood shadow box frame with contrasting fabric mat. The frame was beautifully carved faux bamboo and there is no glass on top. Famille Jaune was developed during Kangxi Reign in Qing dynasty, but these were likely made toward the end of the dynasty around late 19th century. They were beautifully presented with contrasting fabric matting and gilt wood frames.
