About the Item

A Pair of Japanese Imari Chargers, 19th Century Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Description: Each charger with a lobed border and comprising four fan-shaped panels, with two opposing panels depicting hou-ou birds in flight amongst garden scenes on a white ground, the second pair of opposing panels featuring a red scrolling floral cartouche over a cobalt and gilt scrolled ground overlapped by two vertical bands of red hanabishi patterns, to lobed band of alternating red and cobalt panels surrounding the central design of a chrysanthemum bouquet, the whole in the Imari palette.
