About the Item

A superb and rare Chinese blue and white porcelain dish, dating to the early 17th century, late Ming dynasty, and produced at the Jingdezhen kilns for the Japanese market. This piece is a fine example of kosometsuke ware, admired for its restrained elegance and aesthetic harmony. The dish is of refined shallow form, beautifully painted in underglaze cobalt blue with chrysanthemum flowers, symbolizing longevity and autumn. In addition to the main decoration, it features a rare and subtle anhua (hidden decoration): finely incised floral motifs beneath the glaze, only visible when held against the light—an exquisite detail favored by connoisseurs. The base is simply marked with one concentric blue circle. A similar example can be found in the Butler Family Collection, one of the most important private collections of Chinese porcelain for the Japanese market.
