A Rare Pair Kangxi Period (18th C) Chinese Porcelain Wucai Decorated Wall Vases

About the Item

A Fantastic and Rare Pair of Kangxi Period (18th Century) Chinese Porcelain Wucai Decorated Wall Vases/Fountains. Of pear shape, brightly enameled with three court ladies conversing on a terrace, observed by a courtier, the background depicting pavilions and auspicious objects, the spout formed as a horned beast mask with an aperture for a metal pipe, the upper rim decorated with bands of pendent ruyi-heads and lozenge diaper, the foot encircled by a band of floral sawtooth. The reverse flattened and pierced with a small circular aperture for mounting. Wall fountains of this kind are clearly based on some European prototype, probably metal and therefore possibly brass or bullion for the Dutch market, since these tend to date to the late 17th Century, when there was still a flourishing export market in famille verte to Holland through the V.O.C. Finding these porcelain fountains is extremely rare in the current market, and what is more difficult is finding an original pair of them in this condition. Each vase has a hand-carved hardwood base. A status symbol between the 17th and 19th centuries, most garniture sets have by now been damaged or broken up with the individual pieces sold off. The bodies are decorated with hand painted famille rose flowerpot cartouches, as well as, chirping birds, and banded flowers and vines.
