Republic Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Covered Jar, with Calligraphy & Figures

About the Item

Republic Period Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Covered Jar with Calligraphy & Figural Scene China, Circa 1920–1940 Dimensions: 4.5" diameter x 4.5" (including stand) 3 pieces: lid, bottom, and carved wood stand measuring 1" x 4" A finely enameled Chinese porcelain covered jar or tea caddy, beautifully hand-painted in the famille rose palette and dating to the early Republic period. Delicately rendered on the lid is a figural scene of a refined lady and young child in a garden setting, surrounded by bamboo, flowering rocks, and stylized landscape elements. The imagery evokes themes of maternal affection, domestic harmony, and filial piety—motifs prized in both Qing- and Republic-era decorative arts. The cylindrical body is inscribed with a poetic calligraphic verse, expressing emotional longing and parental devotion. Below the text runs a continuous floral garland featuring peony blossoms, symbolic of prosperity and honor. The decoration is executed with subtle coloration and fluid brushwork, characteristic of porcelain from the late Qing to early Republican transition. The base bears a red apocryphal Tongzhi mark (同治年製)—a decorative homage to the Qing dynasty imperial kiln tradition. The interior is clean and suitable for storage, while the form and decoration make it ideal as a scholar’s object or decorative accent. Presented on its original carved rosewood stand, this piece offers both aesthetic refinement and historical charm, suitable for collectors of Chinese export porcelain or literati-style wares.
