Round Porcelain Box from the Hatcher Collection Decorated with Phoenix

About the Item

17th century Chinese porcelain blue and white cosmetics box from the Hatcher Collection decorated with a phoenix. The phoenix is painted with its wings outstretched, its tail fluttering among stylized clouds and Buddhist symbols. The pattern of scrolling clouds continues on the lower half of the box. This small Transitional period (1620-1683) round box was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China seas in approximately 1643. The hoard was the subject of a large sale at Christie's Amsterdam in 1984, which Myrna and Sam Myers attended, and where they purchased this piece. Provenance: Christies Amsterdam, Hatcher Cargo, June 12-13, 1984, lot no. 606. A similar box (lot 228) is pictured on page 23 of the catalog.

Japanese Contemporary Red Yellow Blue Porcelain Box by Master Artist

Mesmerizing Japanese contemporary decorative signed porcelain box, extremely intricately hand-painted in vivid red, blue and yellow with generous gold details, on a stunningly shaped porcelain body. Kinrande style hand-painting represents Arita porcelain, which appeared in the Edo period (1688-1704) and has been handed down to the present day. The colors are deep, and red and gold are used luxuriously, and flower patterns are drawn on the surface of the vessel. This style is thought to reflect the spirit of the Genroku era, which was economically abundant. It is highly decorative and many kinrande works, such as large lidded vases...
