Set of 4, Chinese Export Style Porcelain Rooster Figures, Mid-20th C
About the Item
A whimsical and well-modeled set of four porcelain rooster-form figures in the Chinese Export style, likely dating to the mid-20th century. Each figure is delicately hand-painted, with vivid white glazed bodies accented by bold scarlet combs and wattles, yellow beaks and claws, and naturalistic detailing to the feathers. The roosters are perched upright on tree-stump inspired plinths, painted in a faux-bois gray and brown palette. Each base is hollow with a clean circular opening. While unmarked, the style and execution suggest Italian manufacture during a period when chinoiserie and revival export styles were widely reinterpreted for Western decorative arts markets. These objects echo 18th- and 19th-century Chinese Export porcelain models, with a distinctly playful and stylized midcentury reinterpretation, blending form and function with an eye toward display.
