About the Item

A rare and poetic set of five cups attributed to Kitaōji Rosanjin (1883–1959), one of Japan’s most revered ceramic artists and a leading figure in the mingei and shibui aesthetic movements. Each cup is hand-thrown with an undulating rim and soft ivory glaze over a natural, sandy clay body. The subtle variations in tone and form reflect Rosanjin’s philosophy: beauty found in imperfection, function merging with form. These vessels were likely created for serving sake or tea and exemplify his deep understanding of traditional Japanese craftsmanship combined with bold individuality. Whether displayed as part of a ceramic collection or used in daily rituals, this set embodies refined simplicity and cultural depth.
