About the Item

Two Chinese Yixing Clay Teapots, probably 20th century. These charming teapots are beautifully formed and decorated, with abundant texture brought out by their gentle coloring. The first teapot a collection of joined bamboo stalks in warm brown with navy blue. The second teapot of tree form, with gnarled trunk form base that grows into a branch form handle, with cherry blossom blooms emerging against the gently striated body of the teapot. These beautiful teapots are of petite form, and would make lovely accent pieces to an elegant decorated shelf, or as an addition to a collection. They act as nice compliments to each other, differing in form and coloration in a way that naturally highlights the distinct characteristics of each. The measurements on the listing are for the bamboo teapot. The cherry blossom teapot measures approximately 4 1/2 inches high, 5 3/4 inches deep and 3 and 1/8 inches wide.

Chinese Bamboo Cloth Teapot, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Tea drinking has been an integral part of Chinese culture for centuries, resulting in a wide range of social customs and material traditions. In addition to tea leaves, water, and heat, the art of drinking tea (chayi) calls for a variety of teaware and utensils - both practical and decorative. This charming teapot dates to the late Qing dynasty and is hand-carved from a hollow length of bamboo to appear as though parceled by a cloth strung with tassels. The teapot has a squat, rounded form and a dark brown finish, reminiscent of Yixing red clay teapots...
