About the Item

Antique wine or water container canteen made of wood, cloth, leather and parchment. Wonderful patina to the surface. The Characters on the front reference a medicine shop and on back some mention of the Long March. The 6,000-mile historic trek of the Chinese communists, which resulted in the relocation of the communist revolutionary base from southeastern to northwestern China and in the emergence of Mao Zedong as the undisputed party leader. That would date this canteen to about 1934-35 during China's civil war. In fair condition some surface dents. The calligraphy requires very close inspection and a little oil to the surface to see best. The pictures of the calligraphy have been light adjusted to help exposé the writing. Shanxi China, early 20th century, possibly older.
