About the Item
These trays were made after the late Edo period in Japan (after 1800).
This particular type of tray is known as "Negoro-bon."
Negoro lacquerware is a specific style of Japanese lacquer application characterized by applying black lacquer to the base wood and then adding red lacquer on top.
The origin of this style dates back to the monks using lacquerware at Negoro-ji Temple.
During the Edo period, these trays were produced in large quantities and were commonly used in many temples.
It is believed that this item was used in temples or by individuals of high status.
With repeated use, the black lacquer begins to show through, and this tray also exhibits visible black lacquer along its edges.
I have included photos from the Negoro illustrated collection for your reference.
This tray was made around the late Edo period and features fine cracks in the lacquer coating; however, it is in relatively good condition.
The wood is not warped and can be used without issue.
Negoro's square trays are generally simple and minimally decorative, but this tray stands out with its decorative edges and legs at the four corners, making it a rare and elegant piece.
This is a unique item that is hard to come by.
It comes in a wooden box for storage.
I have set the price reasonably because I want more people to appreciate the beauty of antiques.
Why not show it off to your friends?
