About the Item

An Antique 19th Century Chinese Canton Enamel Gilt Bronze Mounted Hand-Warmer With Double Handle A rectangular Canton enamel hand-warmer with rounded corners, featuring a hinged double handle and a removable pierced cover. The body is decorated with two primary cartouches, each enclosing a polychrome painted scene of an elephant draped in an ornamented cloth, standing in a landscape setting with trees and rocks. Two smaller cartouches depict roosters in fields. These framed cartouches are set against a turquoise ground enamel, which is further adorned with floral motifs. The upper rim of the hand-warmer is encased in a gilt bronze border with a repeating pierced design. The cover, also framed in gilt bronze, features a geometric openwork pattern. The handle, composed of two parallel gilt bronze bars, is attached to the sides with hinge fittings, allowing for movement. The interior is lined with an unenameled copper surface, showing patination. The base is enameled in a similar turquoise ground, with additional floral embellishments. China, Circa: 1800's
