About the Item

A Chinese Export Silver Jardiniere circa 1890, of rectangular form and variously pierced to all four sides. The side with the vacant cartouche has two opposing dragons separated by a flaming pearl; and the three other sides are pierced and decorated with a detailed figural scene, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. The dish stands on four bamboo supports, has a pierced bamboo gallery border, and each corner has a dragon peering into the interior. The jardiniere was retailed by the Shanghai firm of Tuck Chang, with the English spelling of their mark on this piece stamped as Tuch Chang. The Chinese character marks are for ShengJi 生記, a Shanghai artisan workshop that is known to have collaborated with four or more retailers in Shanghai, and at least 6 retailers in Canton and Hong Kong.
