Early 20th Century Cambodian Gilt and Painted Iron Buddha Bust

About the Item

Presenting a stunning early 20th century Cambodian gilt and painted iron Buddha bust. From circa 1920-1930 and from South Eastern Asia, most likely Cambodia based up on the style. This is a hollow cast iron bust of Buddha, in the Classic South East Asian (Cambodian) design and style. It has been gilded and cold painted. Evidence of genuine aging and oxidation, as one would expect. Provenance: From the private collection of a Dallas Private Collector who acquired this on a trip to SE Asia in the 1970’s. Siddhartha Gautama (Sanskrit: ????????? ???? Siddhartha Gautama, c. 563/480 – c. 483/400 BCE) or Siddhattha Gotama in Pali,[note 4] also called the Gautama Buddha, the Shakyamuni Buddha (Brahmi script: ???????????? ???????????????????????????????? Bu-dha Sa-kya-mu-ni, “Buddha, Sage of the Shakyas“) , or simply the Buddha, after the title of Buddha, was a monk (srama?a), mendicant, sage, philosopher, teacher and religious leader on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. He is believed to have lived and taught mostly in the northeastern part of ancient India sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. Gautama taught a Middle Way between sensual indulgence and the severe asceticism found in the srama?a movement common in his region. He later taught throughout other regions of eastern India such as Magadha and Kosala. Gautama is the primary figure in Buddhism. He is believed by Buddhists to be an enlightened teacher who attained full Buddhahood and shared his insights to help sentient beings end rebirth and suffering. Accounts of his life, discourses and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to him were passed down by oral tradition and first committed to writing about 400 years later.

A Stucco Torso of the Buddha, Gandhara, 4th-5th Century

PRESENTING a STUNNING piece of Indian Antiquity from circa the 4th-5th Century, namely, A Stucco Torso of the Buddha, Gandhara. Ancient Gandhara is located in the rugged foothills of the Himalayas in what is today northwest Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan, was for centuries a thriving center of trade along the Silk Road linking China, South Asia, and the Mediterranean. The piece was purchased by a Private Collector at Sotheby’s, or more probably, Christies of New York Auction pre-2000. The paper label on the wooden base is “7281/465” for Sale Number 7281, Lot No. 465. Sotheby’s and Christies operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. Presenting a stunning piece of Indian antiquity from the 10th century, namely, a Varaha red sandstone central India carving. From Central India. This piece has impeccable Provenance! It was purchased by a Private Dallas collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 24th September 2004. Sale Number 8008, Lot No. 28. Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. The sculpture was described as: "Carved in relief with Vishnu in his boar incarnation stepping forward from the ocean, his left foot placed upon a lotus, two nagas beneath with their hands clasped in devotion. Vishnu’s primary right hand rests on his thigh in katihasta mudra while his remaining hands carry his attributes of mace, conch and discus. A diminutive figure of the earth Goddess, Bhudevi, whom Vishnu has rescued from the primeval waters, is balanced on his left elbow. The figure is bejeweled, wearing a broad, beaded waistband and necklaces and is placed within a niche between two pillars. Measure: Height 27 in. (68.6 cm.), circa 10th century.
