Early to Mid-20th Century Chinese Bronze Figurine of Mounted Warrior Guan Yu

About the Item

Early to Mid-20th Century Chinese Bronze Figurine of Mounted Warrior Guan Yu on Bespoke Wooden Stand Description: Presenting an exquisite early to mid-20th century Chinese bronze figurine of Guan Yu, the legendary warrior deity, depicted in a dynamic mounted pose atop his steed. This finely cast sculpture captures Guan Yu in full martial splendor, holding his iconic guandao—a traditional Chinese pole weapon named after him. Resting on a bespoke wooden stand, this piece exemplifies the artistry of 20th-century Chinese bronze casting while honoring the enduring legacy of one of China’s most revered historical and mythological figures. Dimensions: - Height 30cm - Width: 16cm - Depth: 11cm - Weight: 4 lbs (1.8 kg) Details and Craftsmanship: This bronze figurine showcases exceptional craftsmanship, with intricate detailing that highlights the skill of early to mid-20th-century Chinese artisans. Guan Yu is portrayed in a dynamic composition, seated astride a muscular horse that exudes strength and motion. His traditional warrior attire includes flowing robes engraved with subtle dragon and cloud motifs—symbols of power and divinity in Chinese culture. The armor, detailed with scale-like patterns, reflects the historical military garb of the Han Dynasty, while his stern expression and long, flowing beard convey wisdom and authority. In his right hand, he holds the guandao, its crescent blade engraved with delicate patterns, adding to the statue’s commanding presence. The horse is rendered with equal care, its muscular form and slightly raised front leg suggesting readiness for battle. The bronze has developed a rich patina over time, with a mix of deep brown tones and areas of verdigris, particularly in the crevices, which enhance its antique character. The bespoke wooden stand, a hardwood, features a deep, polished finish and a simple bespoke design with slightly raised edges, providing a sturdy and elegant base that complements the figurine without overshadowing its intricate details. Historical and Cultural Significance: Guan Yu, also known as Guan Gong or Guan Di, is one of the most celebrated figures in Chinese history and folklore. A general during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period (circa 184–280 CE), he is renowned for his loyalty to Liu Bei, the founder of the Shu Han state, and his role in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Over centuries, Guan Yu transcended his historical origins to become a deity in Chinese folk religion, Daoism, and Buddhism, worshipped as a guardian of justice, a protector against evil, and a patron of warriors and merchants. The guandao, often associated with Guan Yu, symbolizes his martial prowess. Legend has it that he wielded a guandao named the “Green Dragon Crescent Blade,” a weapon of immense weight that showcased his superhuman strength. Depictions of Guan Yu on horseback are particularly significant, as they often reference his famous steed, Red Hare, a horse said to be capable of traveling 1,000 li (approximately 400 miles) in a single day. Statues of Guan Yu in this mounted pose are often placed in homes, businesses, and temples to invoke protection, prosperity, and success in endeavors. In the early to mid-20th century, bronze figurines of Guan Yu were crafted as both religious and decorative objects, reflecting a period of cultural continuity amidst China’s rapid modernization. This piece likely dates to the 1920s or 1930s, a time when artisans continued to honor traditional techniques while producing works for both domestic use and the growing international market for Chinese art. The dynamic composition and detailed engraving suggest it may have been created for a collector, a merchant’s shop, or a household shrine. Condition: The figurine is in excellent condition for its age, with a naturally developed patina that enhances its character. There are minor signs of wear consistent with an early to mid-20th-century piece, including light surface scratches and areas of verdigris, which add to its authenticity. The bespoke wooden stand shows slight wear along the edges but remains structurally sound and beautifully complements the bronze. Provenance: While the exact provenance of this piece is unknown, it is characteristic of early to mid-20th-century bronze works produced in China, possibly in regions like Fujian or Guangdong, known for their skilled metalworkers. Such figurines were often created for domestic use or as export pieces during this period, when Chinese art gained popularity among global collectors. Why This Piece? This early to mid-20th-century bronze figurine of Guan Yu on horseback is a rare and captivating find for collectors of Chinese art, history enthusiasts, or those seeking a meaningful cultural artifact. Its dynamic composition, detailed craftsmanship, and spiritual symbolism make it a striking addition to any collection or space. Whether displayed in a study, living room, or meditation area, this figurine embodies the timeless virtues of loyalty, courage, and honor associated with Guan Yu, while its mounted pose adds a sense of movement and grandeur.
