About the Item

Hongō Toshihiko bronze vase with lotus bud form, slightly bulbous having a narrower base. The relief design is of overlapping lotus petals and a verdigris finish on the yellow bronze body. The slightly recessed base is stamped with the artist’s signature, Toshi. Complete with a signed and sealed wrapping cloth and the original tomobako wood storage box, inscribed on the inside: Nihon Kogei Sei Kai Kaiin Hongō Toshihiko with the seal Hongō Toshihiko. Excellent Condition. Late 20th Century. Vase: 9.625 in. tall x 6.25 in. in diameter (24.5 x 15.9cm) Box: 11 in. tall x 7 in. square (28 x 17.7 x 17.7cm) Weight: 4 lbs. 3 oz. (1893g.) Provenance: Kazuo Kuwabara, San Diego. Bio: Hongō Toshihiko (1947-2010), learnt metal work under his father Hongō Yoshihiko Kakuho, a famous metal artist in Japan. Since the 1700's, the Hongō family was involved in the metal crafting business in Ishikawa, particularly producing works with Kaga work, a technique of inlaying mixed metals into a bronze or other base metal. Toshihiko became a member of the Kaga Metal Craftsman association, based in Takaoka City, in Toyama prefecture. In 2004 he was appointed a Dento kogeishi, or traditional craftsman by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Toshihiko exhibited at the Japan Art Crafts exhibition seventeen times and won many awards, including an award from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education.

Bronze vase by Nakajima Yasumi II (1905-1986), Showa period, Circa 1960-70. Patinated dark reddish brown, the vase has a slender waisted shape. The base cast with a seal-style signature, along with the inscribed Tomobako (Paulownia) wood storage box. In good condition, the vase shows some rubbing with handling and there is a small area of very minor marks. Please refer to the last photograph. The storage box is in very good condition.
