About the Item
A stunning limited edition bronze vase titled “Kirameki” (Sparkle) by renowned Japanese artist Ikeda Masuo (池田満寿夫, 1934–1997). This striking sculptural piece is number 42 out of 100, and is accompanied by its original kiribako (paulownia wood box) signed and sealed by the artist himself.
Cast in bronze and finished with an expressive oxidized patina in hues of turquoise, blue-green, and copper, the vase displays bold asymmetry and abstract, almost architectural folds and curves. The design evokes a dynamic sense of movement, almost like a figure wrapped in cloth or rising from stone.
Ikeda Masuo was a celebrated multi-disciplinary artist: a printmaker, ceramicist, sculptor, novelist, and film director. In the 1960s, he was active in New York and became internationally acclaimed for his work in copperplate printmaking and contemporary Japanese art. He was awarded the Venice Biennale International Print Prize in 1966 and the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1977.
This vase was created in August 1997 (Heisei 9), the final year of the artist’s life, and is one of the final expressions of his unique vision. It represents a rare opportunity to own a numbered, boxed, and documented sculpture by an artist who left a lasting impact on modern Japanese art.
