About the Item

An impressive pair of Chinese cloisonne phoenix form zun vases, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The attractive and fantastic pair of red ground cloisonne vases in the form of mythical phoenix birds carrying zun form vases upon their backs. The stately birds stand upright, necks raised high and looking straight ahead, wings tucked against their bodies, and tails curled under them. The avian figures are worked all over in the cloisonne enamel technique. The red cloisonne ground serves as the background for the wild and colorful archaistic and geometric patterns. The green, blue, yellow, and white enamels form patterns simulating feathers, and creating taotie (monster mask) designs throughout the body. The removable zun form vases on the back are decorated in the same color palette and future scrolling floral and foliate motifs of stylized lotus and chrysanthemum.
