Pair Chinese Cloisonne Tapir Candlesticks, Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China

About the Item

A delightful pair of Chinese cloisonne candlesticks in the form of tapirs, Late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The charming pair of candlesticks each crafted as a tapir seated upon a round table-form pedestal. The tapirs rest upon their haunches, heads turned back, with removable sprigs of lingzhi (the fungus of immortality) in their mouths. The candlestick, with a pricket, cup, and plate, also removable. The tapirs decorated in a wonderful turquoise ground cloisonne enamel with designs of abstracted dragons and phoenixes in various colored enamels of mostly dark blue and red, but with areas of pink and yellow. The round table-form stands of a deep burgundy red cloisonne ground with abstracted floral sprays in various enamels of dark green, turquoise blue, pink, and yellow. The elegant cabriole legs shaped as ruyi heads. The apron of gilt openwork in the form of stylized lotus blossoms. While not currently native to China, images of tapirs have been found in Chinese art since the late Shang or early Zhou Dynasties (circa 12th century BC), with most extant examples being cast in bronze. Recently, the skeleton of a sacrificed tapir was found in the tomb of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty (ruled 180 to 157 BC), indicating tapirs may have roamed China in ancient times.
