About the Item
These curious bell-shaped objects are a type of Thai bent-silver currency known as photduang, pod duang or bullet money, the latter term for their resemblance to old lead ball ammo. In use as early as the Sukhothai Kingdom (1238–1438) and up until 1904, photduang coins were issued according to the baht system of weights and were shaped from silver bars, which were bent in half and stamped with marks indicating the dynastic reign. This set of six are shaped to graduated sizes of differing values and stamped with marks suggesting an age of early to mid-19th century.
