Chinese Splayed Leg Headrest
About the Item
This low, four-leg stool is actually a headrest used atop a daybed or mat to support the head while sleeping, reclining, or smoking opium. As an opium accessory, rigid headrests such as this allowed an inebriated smoker to to more comfortably lie on their side and maintain a view of their opium lamp. This example recreates traditional forms with a splayed leg design that supports a gently curved top rest.
