About the Item
This large wheelbarrow served in the rural area of China during the early-20th century opening the door to easier travel and greater productivity. It has a single, three-foot wheel with a carrying surface that encases the top of the wheel and is flanked by a platform on each side. The platform was designed for transporting supplies and people. The wheel's axle attaches to the carrying surface on two grooves, allowing the wheel to be easily added or removed.
The Chinese are credited with this ingenious design, which moved the single wheel of the wheelbarrow from the front to the center, enabling the wheelbarrow to carry three to six times more weight. This design served rural Chinese communities who traveled and traded via a network of narrow paths with smoother land transportation and the capacity to carry heavy loads.
