1970s Chinese Export Black Coromandel Carved Laquer Panel by Zhongkun
About the Item
Chinese export coromandel panel titled 'Guo Jiu Feng En' (Xijiu Seal?), and signed by the artist 'Zhongkun'.
This striking Chinese lacquer panel showcases a traditional technique with a contemporary interpretation for modern use - rather than a screen it was produced as a hanging panel for display as an art work. Produced for the export market after the glossy black finish and fine detailing of Black Coromandel became hugely popular in the mid 20th century and the craft was revived for the export trade. This one dates to the 1970s. It is not of the highest quality execution but the overall effect is dark, rich and moody, which makes it a very nice panel for decorative use.
This panel shows a court scene, with an emperor or duke being entertained by musicians and dancers. It's intended to draw the viewer into a narrative scene. Notably, the door to another room, probably a bedroom, is veiled by a curtain, suggesting the dancers might in fact be courtesans.
Originating from a quality collection of mid-century and modern Asian art, this piece presents beautifully either hung or leaning on a shelf or console.
Makes a wonderful dark, glossy, moody backdrop to a bar shelf or cart. This is a work to put into use - it's not in the finest condition but the black lacquer still gives it a deep, rich, moody presence. Priced accordingly.

Losses and some ill-considered repairs here and there. The black lacquer is polished to a high gloss, the colours have darkened and particularly the faces are not super legible. Overall impression is very good, deep, dark, moody. Priced accordingly.
