Anglo Indian Painting of Tipu Sultan's Fortress Nundydroog, Mysore c. 1853 Prov

About the Item

Offered here is an Anglo-Indian watercolor Painting of Tipu Sultan's Fortress in Nundydroog, Mysore. A tag on the back indicates "The Fort, Nundy, Droog, Mysore, 1853" and it comes from the estate of Dr. William K. Ehrenfeld, a well-known collector of Indian and Anglo-Indian paintings, San Francisco, California. The masterfully painted scene depicts the road leading up to the fort's gate; now showing cows and a cow herd in the distance. Fortifications on the edge of the cliff show signs of where the canons were placed, a remnant of a once mighty fort. The frame with thick molding is covered with 24k gold leaf. It measures 18 1/2 inches tall by 22 1/2 inches wide. The visible watercolor itself measures 9 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches. The siege of Nundydroog was conducted by British East India Company forces under the command of General Charles Cornwallis in October 1791, during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. The fortress of Nundydroog, was held by the forces of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore. Tipu Sultan (December 1751 – 4 May 1799) commonly referred to as "Tiger of Mysore", was a ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India. Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali used their French-trained army in alliance with the French in their struggle against the British and other surrounding powers. Tipu's conflicts with his neighbours included the Maratha–Mysore War, which ended with the signing of the Treaty of Gajendragad. However, Tipu remained an enemy of the British East India Company. He initiated an attack on British-allied Travancore in 1789. In the Third Anglo-Mysore War, he was forced into the Treaty of Seringapatam, losing a number of previously conquered territories, including Malabar and Mangalore. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, a combined force of British East India Company troops supported by the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad defeated Tipu. He was killed on 4 May 1799 while defending his stronghold of Seringapatam.
