About the Item

Offered here is a gouache and gold miniature painting on paper of an amorous couple on a veranda set against a mountain and lake background. The male dressed in a princely attire is leaning over his semi-clad lover resting against a bolster. He is presumably offering her a cup of an intoxicant while she is in a state of undress. In the foreground is a group of bottles and a platter for fruit. The prince's turban is in a gold fabric and is adorned with a string of pearls. His jama or garment is painted with scattered gold flowers. His lover is adorned with jewelry from head to toe and her dress is richly decorated with gold as well. The lovers bodies painted in warm colors are highlighted against a white veranda while the rolling hills across the lake adds a sense of privacy to their tryst. Scenes of lovers in erotic embrace was a popular genre of painting in courtly circles in India during the 18th and 19th centuries. The visible painting including its borders measure 11 x 7 1/2 inches (HxW). The frame measures 14 3/4 x 11 1/4 inches (HxW).
